Community Detox Rockstars Edition #2 – Emma Peters

In the second interview with my Community Detox Rockstars I am chatting to Emma Peters, mum to a 9 month old. Listen as she shares with you her winning highlights from a  month of super healthy living. From FOMO to a whopping 7kg drop on the scales this woman will completely inspire you!
Edition #2 – Emma Peters
What was the biggest achievement you experienced on Community Detox?
My biggest achievement was getting over my “fear of missing out” on my favourite treats. They were my way of relaxing and rewarding myself after an exhausting day. After a month of eating mindfully, I can finally say no to those pesky treats and enjoy a healthy substitute – so empowering.
Oh, and just over 7kgs weight loss and counting!
How would you describe Community Detox to someone?
Community Detox is the most supportive environment with a winning combination of education, encouragement and structure. On good days, there’s always someone to congratulate you. On difficult days you get cheered on to make the best decisions. This was very sustaining for me.
Can you explain exactly how you achieved your amazing results? Do you feel there were any specific elements of Community Detox that really helped you?
I stuck to the rules as best I could. It seems all or nothing works for me. The great recipes inspired new meals throughout the month. Planning for the week ahead with groceries to suit was key. My detox buddy and sister, Hannah, constantly checked in on me and gave me advice. And applying mindful eating – this eliminated grazing or mindless snacking.
What was the key lesson you learnt on this Community Detox?
I learnt that I can say no to unhealthy food, substitute in healthy choices, and not […]

Community Detox Rockstars Edition #1 – Trudie Hood

This week I have been interviewing some of the members of February’s Community Detox. We had incredible results all round but there were certainly some Rockstars amongst the group. Make a cuppa and get comfortable as I discover the secrets of these amazing people!
Edition #1 – Trudie Hood
What was the biggest achievement you experienced on Community Detox?
My biggest achievement was losing 7kg in a month and being in a good mindset to stick to my goals. Also not giving into peer pressure to ‘have an odd wine” or “surely one coffee wont hurt”. The feeling gained from being strong is amazing
How would you describe Community Detox to someone?
CD is a life changing experience, this is my second one and I have once again gathered so much more information and learned much about myself. CD is a real time of honesty and change if you truly want it. The sense of community really lifts you and at the same time remains a private space to share your experience. Detox for me has to be a month only then can you truly see what you need to change.
Can you explain exactly how you achieved your amazing results? Do you feel there were any specific elements of Community Detox that really helped you?
I think mainly because I was focused, I didnt cheat and prepared well knowing it would be tough and I wanted so much to kick start a change. Choosing to ramp up my detox with intermittent fasting probably made the difference as it allowed me to see how much I was eating and why I was eating. This in turn helped me shed the kilos while still eating amazing food. The advice from Emma and […]

A High Protein Energy Boost in 3 Easy Steps

I am in love with chia seeds for their amazing nutritional punch as well as how versatile they are. Chia seeds are a gluten free seed that have 20% complete protein. The significant water soluble fibre levels helps to cleanse and soothe the colon as the seeds soak up to 9 times their weight in water! My pregnant clients swear by chia seeds to fix their constipation.
With bucket loads more alpha linolenic acid, the super healthy omega 3, than salmon chia seeds have an anti-inflammatory effect, which can lower pain as well as the risk of chronic disease.
2 tablespoons of Chia = 7 grams of fiber, 2 grams of protein, 205mgs of calcium, 5 gr omega-3
And it’s not just the tree loving hippies that love chia seeds! I always look at the clinical studies to back up nutritional claims and chia seeds are amazing.

Recent research showed that eating chia can not only reduce your waistline but also lower your glucose and cholesterol levels. This makes chia the perfect superfood for people with PCOS, insulin resistance, diabetes or metabolic syndrome.

Studies show that diabetics who eat chia seeds daily for 12 weeks have lower blood pressure and their blood was less likely to clot unnecessarily.

By simply adding chia seeds to your diet, know that your digestion will be happier, glucose levels more stable and waistline smaller!

Is Your Kitchen Toxic?

Plastics are everywhere in the average kitchen – from food storage containers to drinking straws, cooking utensils, zip lock bags and the list goes on and on. There are dozens of chemicals that make up plastics with some types of plastics being worse than others but lets focus on plastics that come into contact with food and water. A lot of research has confirmed the negative effects of many environmental chemicals, especially in regard to fertility.

BPA is a synthetic chemical used in the manufacture of primarily polycarbonate plastics which are used for packaging and in the production of epoxy linings from canned foods. BPA is one of the most ubiquitous chemicals with around 93% of people tested in Australia showing measurable levels in the body. BPA is a synthetic estrogen also known as an endocrine-disruptor capable of blocking or mimicking natural hormones in the human body and is linked to weight gain, thyroid imbalances and insulin resistance. Look for #7 on plastics
Phthalates are known as plasticizers and are a class of chemicals often used in making hard plastics soft and flexible. They are also known as endocrine-disruptors so have similar effects as BPA. Prenatal exposure to phthalates has been linked to a cluster of general birth defects in boys though so be careful if you are pregnant. Look for #3 on plastics. Instead of canned food opt for glass jars. Eden organics make canned products using enamel lining instead of BPA. Food storage opt for mason jars or glass such as lock n lock.
Non stick cookware is something we all love but unfortunately they are made with chemicals called perfluorinated chemicals. Perfluorinated chemical exposure has been linked to thyroid disorders, hyperactivity, reproductive issues and prenatal exposure has […]

A Guide to Gluten Free Grains

It’s Community Detox month which means we are all eating gluten free. Embarking on a gluten free diet can be a daunting experience. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, kamut, spelt, barley and oats, which means that many previously staple foods may be banished from the pantry. So which grains are safe to eat?
Rice
Rice is one of the most versatile grains, and it’s neutral taste means that it goes with just about everything. Use brown rice where possible, or go for basmati if you need a white rice.  Give the highly processed rice products a miss though, because they can play havoc with your blood glucose levels.
Corn
Whether it’s pasta, cous cous or crackers, corn has you covered. Forget the debate about whether it’s a vegetable or a grain, corn acts like a grain, and is fantastic with savoury dishes. It holds together well and tastes great!
Millet
Millet is sometimes overlooked as a gluten free option, probably because it takes a little longer to cook. But millet has a yummy mild taste, is full of minerals and is fantastic in porridge, bread and baked goods, so it’s worth the extra effort.
Buckwheat
One of the most nutrient dense grains, buckwheat has quite a strong, nutty flavour. It goes well with robust dishes, like mushrooms, roasted tomatoes and dark green leafy veggies. Buckwheat grains can also be sprouted first, making them easier to digest.
Quinoa
Not actually a grain, quinoa is a seed which, when cooked, behaves like a grain. To cook it, follow exactly the same directions as you would for rice. Quinoa goes beautifully with stir fries, casseroles, curries, Mexican food, and cooked quinoa can even be made as a bircher muesli.
Amaranth
Amaranth is similar to quinoa, except the grains […]

Detox Month – Discover the Top 4 Fads

October on Emma Sutherland is detox month – a perfect opportunity to declutter your life and boost your health and vitality. But with so many conflicting approaches around at the moment – which are the best ways to encourage our body’s natural detoxification. Well I got on the case and went searching for the best at home remedies to kick start your body’s cleansing process.
+ Hot water in lemon – This old nugget o’ wisdom is a brilliant, tried and tested one. Consuming alkaline and sour foods encourages our liver and gallbladder to release stored toxins. Our body can’t metabolize fat when our livers are choc-a-block full of toxins so a simple lemony start to your day can to wonders for your waist line too. Add a hit o’ fresh ginger for bonus detox points.
+ Edible clay – I know. Bear with me. This one SOUNDS bizarre but it’s actually a brilliant way to get your insides squeaky clean. Without getting too ‘sciency’ on you, bentonite clay possesses a negative electrical, which, as we all know, attracts positively charged particles and sucks ‘em right up. Most toxins in the body are positively charged so the clay acts like a ‘sham-wow’ cleaning these nasties buggers out and leaving our insides beautiful and sparkly.
+ Dry body brushing – There are TONNES of articles floating around the internet that discuss the benefits of this simple and enjoyable home remedy. Dry body brushing can improve the appearance of your skin by assisting in the removal of dead skin cells, improving circulation, reducing the appearance of cellulite and stimulating the blood and lymphatic systems and … you guessed it, assisting in natural detoxification.
+ Colonic hydrotherapy – I know I […]

My Top 5 Tips for Reducing Exposure to Phthalates

Phthalates are a class of toxic chemicals that are used as softeners or lubricants in products that we use every day and are the most commonly used plasticizers in the world. These chemicals are commonly used with PVC, a known carcinogen, and some other chemicals to make cosmetics and personal care products, medical devices, food and water containers, footwear, solvents, wires and cables, automotive components and children’s toys1,2.
Questions have been raised over the safety of the use of phthalates. Studies have proven that of the 20 types of phthalates commonly used, some are detrimental to our health, with children being more easily affected than adults3.
Babies and young children are at higher risk because of their extensive chewing or sucking on toys. Research was conducted by Australia’s National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) into children’s plastic products.  It found that if levels of DEHP, a common phthalate were higher than 1%, there was an  increased risk for reproductive system toxicity in children up to 36 months of age who chew and suck objects on a recurrent basis for more than 40 minutes per day1.
As babies and toddler are still rapidly growing and their nervous system maturing they are at higher risk for the harmful effects of phthalates. Since 2011, Australia has banned children’s toys, childcare articles, eating utensils and plates containing DEHP in excess of 1%.
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in particular, is listed in Tox Town, the US National Library of Medicine web site, as a substance “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen”.  Male newborn babies who had medical tubes or other plastic devices inserted, especially for feeding, breathing or medication have been found to suffer from adverse effects2. Recently, research has shown that […]

Emily’s Holistic Detox Plan – Halfway Through Her Nutritional Cleanse

Emily’s Holistic Detox Plan – Halfway Through Her Nutritional Cleanse

End of June and, due to my belated kick off date, halfway through my holistic detox plan. Check out my original post to read up on my goals and aspirations for the 30 days of June/July.
Nutritional Cleanse – Officially started this baby midway through June and still have a few weeks to go until it’s officially deemed ‘complete’. One thing that has most DEFINITELY changed is my awareness of my daily intake and snacking habits and emotionally driven eating behaviours. I never really considered myself an ‘emotional’ eater but getting back to the essence of eating and nourishing my body has been an absolute blessing because I’m far more aware of the physiological signs of hunger, satiety and fullness. Out went all processed and nasties and I do feel better for it. Will save the real review for the very end of the 30 days so stay tuned my lovelies.

Emotional Detox
This was a bit of a doozey to be honest. I find myself bombarded with negative and self deprecating thoughts on a daily basis. The challenge was to ‘boing flip’ these emotional triggers and stop them dead in their tracks. Only catch was, I wasn’t really prepared for how ‘present’ I needed to be and how ‘aware’ I had to become to witness my fears and thoughts. I urge you all to trial this little exercise and apply it in your own lives. I have emerged from the month with a greater sense of appreciation for who I am, the strengths I possess and self acceptance. Take home notes? Affirm your strengths, dismiss the ‘smack talk’, banish the comparisons and love yourself sick. You are totally worth it and such a special unique soul.
