What are your top 3 tricks to getting more fruit and vegetables into
your children’s diet?
I have two gorgeous children and although we have had our moments, both of them are now in their teens and eat most vegetables and every fruit you could imagine. It takes a little perseverance and some clever strategies as well as setting a good example yourself.  My biggest tip though is to make food fun!

It’s all in the marketing!  Get your kids excited about fruit and veges by sharing the benefits with them in a fun way. Carrots have special super powers and can make you see better at night. Oranges fight off the cold and flu germs in your body. You can also make up fancy names for healthy food you prepare. Green smoothies can become much more appealing if you call them a […]

What are your top 3 tricks to getting more fruit and vegetables into
your children’s diet?
1. Your blender is your best friend!  – Fruits and veggies blend together so well that kids won’t even notice they’re eating something healthy! Try fresh raw fruits and veggies in your blender and juicer to create a variety of smoothies and juices. You can even add a couple a spoonfuls of raw super foods, like Spirulina powder and Goji berries. My daughter Issy had her first green smoothie when she was 7 months old and she loved it – 1 banana, 1/2 apple, 1 cup spinach, 1-2 cups water.

Some of her other favourites are:

Baby Love

2 bananas
1 pear
1 cup Kale
1/2 cup water

What are your top 3 tricks to getting more fruit and vegetables into
your children’s diet?
Creating nutritious foods for kids is easy with a few little tips and tricks. Firstly, you can involve them in the shopping and cooking process and get them interested in the kinds of foods that they are eating.

Veggie-packed meatballs – Next time you make meatballs, use a food processor to blend mushrooms and zucchini, then add it to the meat mixture before forming the balls. When cooked, your kids won’t notice the extra veggies, but you’ll know they’re in there!
Marinara sauce – Most kids love pasta, so take advantage of it and make a sauce that’s full of vegetables. When cooking the sauce as you normally would, add zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, kale or any other vegetable you’d like to sneak in. Use a handheld blender to smooth the sauce before dishing it up with a bowl of pasta. They will never know the difference.
Chia muffins – Chia seeds are a delicious super food, packed with omega 3s and ridiculously high in antioxidants. They’re extremely […]

Healthy Easter Treat Ideas

Easter time is traditionally filled with chocolate in all shapes and sizes, but for toddlers the blood sugar rollercoaster that follows can result in temper tantrums, which leave everyone frazzled. By starting as you mean to go on, you can encourage your toddler to eat healthily at Easter and not automatically expect chocolate Easter eggs as she gets older.

Keeping in mind that it’s hard to avoid chocolate altogether (and a little chocolate is fine as part of a balanced diet), here are my healthy Easter treat ideas:
Healthy options for Easter

Have your toddler help you make fruit kebabs – make sure you use different colours to appeal to their visual appetite.
Offer plain homemade popcorn – every toddler loves the anticipation of the ‘pop’!
Opt for chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa solids (ie dark chocolate). This means more antioxidants for growing bodies – plus you and your toddler will eat less of it!
Pancakes with fresh berries or banana and maple syrup make a great Easter Sunday breakfast.
Chocolate beetroot brownies are a great way to sneak veg in, and create a deliciously moist cake at the same time
Easter bunny rice cakes: Take a rice cake, spread with hommus or your favourite dip and use this to start making a bunny! Use thin carrot sticks for whiskers, sultanas for eyes, cucumber for ears and a cherry tomato for a nose. Cute!
For creative fun, use food dye or hand paint boiled eggs

How to reduce the effects of sugar
There will always be times when your toddler eats their fair share of sweet treats. Plan ahead and incorporate some of these tips into her diet on the same day and the sugar fallout will be less harsh:

Make sure your toddler eats low-glycemic index […]

Nutritional Punch of Hemp Seeds

I have been eating hemp seeds for a while now and love their nutritional bang. The members of Community Detox are getting just as addicted as I am!! I add them to smoothies, make milk by soaking them, blending and straining and also put on my fruit for a protein hit.
Hemp seed oil is also a wonderful addition to a salad dressing or add a drizzle over cooked vegetables. Although a little challenging to find, hempseeds and oil are well worth the effort.
Hemp kernels are produced by removing the outer shell of the hemp seed, with no other processing or additives. The kernels are raw and free of chemicals and artificial additives.
Hemp seed contains both Omega 3 and Omega 6 in an ideal ratio of 1:3 along with uniquely high levels of vitamin E, which protects and preserves the delicate oil from oxidation. Further, unlike marine Omega 3, hemp seed is free from dioxins, PCB and other contaminants, making it an ideal choice for pregnant women and children.
Why eat hemp kernels?
Hemp kernels contain a complete range of amino acids and are suitable for those who choose vegetarian or vegan diets. Because they are low in carbohydrate, they are also suitable for diabetics.
Hemp kernels can be eaten straight from the packet, sprinkled over cereals of fruit salad, or added to a variety of sweet or savoury food. It is generally not recommended that kernels be cooked, although they can be added to baked goods, biscuits or breads, to boost the nutritional value of these products.
Store in freezer or fridge to ensure optimal freshness.

A High Protein Energy Boost in 3 Easy Steps

I am in love with chia seeds for their amazing nutritional punch as well as how versatile they are. Chia seeds are a gluten free seed that have 20% complete protein. The significant water soluble fibre levels helps to cleanse and soothe the colon as the seeds soak up to 9 times their weight in water! My pregnant clients swear by chia seeds to fix their constipation.
With bucket loads more alpha linolenic acid, the super healthy omega 3, than salmon chia seeds have an anti-inflammatory effect, which can lower pain as well as the risk of chronic disease.
2 tablespoons of Chia = 7 grams of fiber, 2 grams of protein, 205mgs of calcium, 5 gr omega-3
And it’s not just the tree loving hippies that love chia seeds! I always look at the clinical studies to back up nutritional claims and chia seeds are amazing.

Recent research showed that eating chia can not only reduce your waistline but also lower your glucose and cholesterol levels. This makes chia the perfect superfood for people with PCOS, insulin resistance, diabetes or metabolic syndrome.

Studies show that diabetics who eat chia seeds daily for 12 weeks have lower blood pressure and their blood was less likely to clot unnecessarily.

By simply adding chia seeds to your diet, know that your digestion will be happier, glucose levels more stable and waistline smaller!
